The Vitara has also been marketed as the Suzuki Escudo in Japan and several other markets. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. The fourth generation was released in 2015 and went back to the original "Vitara" name in most markets, but then shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style.
