When the car was made, the subcompact term was not yet a trend, however in today's terms, that is what it would classify as. It came with a 3-speed manual transmission and with either a 1,200 cc (1.2 L) B-Series I4; or 1,500 cc (1.5 L) B-Series I4 engine. At the time the car was built, it was categorized as a "small automobile" as well as an "economy car". When Nash and Hudson merged in 1954 to form the American Motors Corporation (AMC), the car was also sold as a Hudson, and later as a standalone marque during the Rambler years, as well as in the United Kingdom and other markets. Nash wanted to stand out and be able to offer American buyers an economical transportation alternative. The Metropolitan was designed in the U.S. and it was patterned from a concept car, the NXI (Nash Experimental International), that was built by Detroit-based independent designer William J. Flajole for Nash-Kelvinator.
