The Mercury Mountaineer is a MIDSIZE LUXURY SUV SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE sold by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company from 1997 until 2010. Sharing many of its features with the Ford Explorer, the two trucks are VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL in terms of hardware. ALTHOUGH LESS POPULAR, THE MOUNTAINEER WAS A BETTER TRUCK! Externally, they are styled somewhat differently, and the Mountaineer has a MORE UPSCALE INTERIOR, with the Mountaineer MSRP coming in at $1000 to $6000 more expensive. The Mountaineer has been praised for its EXCELLENT HANDLING AND STABILITY. As part of the discontinuation of the Mercury brand, production of the Mountaineer ended in late 2010. In that same year, AutoWeek Drivers Log called Mountaineer an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL TRUCK INSIDE AND OUT with SMOOTH POWER AND A QUIET NATURE. Auto Week Buyers Guide reported Mountaineer as among the QUIETEST AND STIFFEST SUVs. Motor Trend called Mountaineer an Explorer for individualists. Motor Trend said Mountaineer looks more chiseled with a stiffer structure and tougher chassis for a smoother ride.
