These configurations included the Base and the Premier. The SUV was sold by the Ford Motor Company's Mercury Division from 1997 to 2010 when the company terminated the Mercury line. The Mountaineer shares a ton of its features with the Ford Explorer, and virtually they are identical in terms of hardware. The Mountaineer offered a more upscale interior and was praised for its excellent stability and handling. Before the Mercury line was discontinued, AutoWeek Drivers Log called the SUV an "Absolutely Beautiful Truck Inside and Out with Smooth Power and a Quiet Nature." Auto Week Buyers Guide reported Mountaineer as among the "Quietest and Stiffest SUVs." Motor Trend called Mountaineer an Explorer for individualists.
