  The GMC Safari is a rear wheel drive mid sized minivan or caravan styled vehicle introduced by General Motors to rival domestic competitors such as the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager. Safari shares the platform with its sibling, the Chevy Astro. In addition to standard passenger uses, the vans were also available as cargo vans, and converters used them as the basis for small conversion vans. While the Astro was referred to as a minivan, it was sized between the Chevrolet unibody minivan and the full size Chevy Van Express. Similar to the Aerostar, it utilized powertrain components common to GM light trucks. Due to a truck based powertrain, the Safari can pull 5500 lbs with proper equipment. This is opposed to front wheel drive minivans; most of which are limited to a 3500 pound towing capacity.
